A real Connection To HaShem can only be found through complete and sincere TeShuva. In the prophet Jeremiah's day the false prophets outnumbered Jeremiah 500:1, very similar to the situation today. The false prophets also said the same thing they do today, "HaShem won't punish." And after they were proven wrong with the destruction of the First Beit HaMikdash, Jeremiah wrote Sefer Eicha, the Book of Lamentations, crying over the destruction, the exile caused by the failure of the people to listen to his rebukes.
